Mother Earth News Fair Favorites & a GIVEAWAY

by mrfarmersdaughter.com

A few weeks ago I got to hang out with my people. Until just last year I didn’t realize they were my people but one trip out to Seven Springs, PA later and I was totally convinced.

These are the people that garden.
These are the people that farm.
These people make their own salves and lotions, their own hats and sweaters.
They even make their food from scratch! Mostly from their own vegetables and home-raised meats!

See, these are MY people.

So, this year when I went, I was determined to bring back some favorite items to share with you. In the interest of transparency, while this is not a sponsored post, per se, I did receive a small discount to be able to offer you, my friends, a little giveaway.

I said GIVEAWAY! We’ll talk about that more at the end of this post though. First, let me share with you some of my very favorite things I found there.

These Bee’s Wrap food covers are the bomb! They are made of thin fabric covered in a fine layer of bee’s wax – very flexible, especially when warm. They are a wonderful alternative to plastic wrap. I bought a few sheets of this a few years ago and over time most of them have “disappeared.” By disappeared I mean that maybe one of the kids in my house didn’t realize how much they cost and dumped them the trash because they didn’t want to wash them. Not naming names though …

I use these for cheese, cut up veggies and to cover large bowls and I bought a large sheet to cut into smaller pieces for some small glass bowls that have no lids. I’ve read that some people have had trouble with the smell of the wax transferring to the food. I haven’t experienced that but they do tend to have an odor when you first open them. It’s a pleasant smell, I think.

garlic-600

Follow me until July 4th next year and you’ll get to see what happens to these guys!!

Last year I bought a mixed bag of garlic from Enon Valley Garlic and they were okay but honestly, I didn’t know which ones were hottest, which ones were supposed to be the biggest and which ones were smaller. I also didn’t harvest them at the right time either. This year I bought three separate varieties that do well in my area that I will test in the 2017 garden. I’m excited to get these in the ground – which needs to happen soon!

This hat is what dreams were made of. Seriously, my daughter and I looked at these hats last year – for a long time. We agonized over whether we wanted a “cowboy” hat or not. Then, for an entire year we thought about these hat. A lot.

This year we don’t have to dream. We both got one and I wear it to the barn often. I never realized a hat kept your head so warm, duh… This will be invaluable through the winter. I’m so happy to have it! If you’d like one, you gotta call the maker himself. His number is inside each hat. northstarleather.com / (843)634-6262

SOoooooo, THIS thing! When I saw it, I knew I had to have it. First, it’s 13″ around. Second, it can be used on the stovetop AND in the oven. Yes, you read that right. Ya know that baking stone you have stored away for pizza? This is better. It’s soapstone and it’s able to be heated up to 2000˚. I’m pretty sure no one’s home oven goes that high. I haven’t had time to use it yet, which is why it’s so clean, but I can’t wait to make pizza on this baby.

I’m told it needs preheated in a cold oven. Also, to heat it up slowly on the stovetop. And, that it darkens as it gets seasoned. But, if I get tired of it looking dirty, I can just sand it down and make it look like new again. I’m not sure why you’d want to do that but, nice to know I can. It was difficult to choose only one piece from Vermont Marble and Granite Company. I’m already planning the piece I’ll buy next year.

And, now to the GIVEAWAY!

Last year I bought a mason jar drinking set from The Green Life and I’ve used it almost daily for a year. I love it! So, I bought another one. And, yet another one with a stainless steel straw plus a reusable sandwich bag … just for you! Christina has so many cute designs and prints for her products, it really is hard to choose! Check out her stuff at the link above and enter the giveaway below to win these items!

The first items that I changed from disposable to reusable was all my plastic storage containers! My sister in law was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago and it really made our whole family take a hard look at all the ways chemicals seep into our food and bodies! I threw out everything plastic and replaced it with glass. Even when we order out, I always as for paper instead of styrofoam!

I switched from using paper plates to washable plates when camping. Used to do it all the time but it makes fir a lot of garbage and ic tbere is one thing this planet has is to
much garbage. A little bit of water and dishsoap goes a long way in making less garbage. Gets expensive buyjng something you are just going to throw out anyways.
