Light, flaky layers between sweet walnuts and honey syrup make this traditional Greek baklava exceptional. You’ll never want another version again after tasting this!

  • Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Yield: 30

Ingredients

FOR THE FILLING:

4 cups finely chopped walnuts (I soak and dry mine first.)
1 ½ cups plain bread crumbs, dried
1 tsp cinnamon
½ cup cane sugar
FOR THE SYRUP:
3 cups sugar
3 cups water
1 ½ Tbls honey
1 stick of cinnamon
Fresh orange peel from one orange
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS:
1 box organic phyllo dough, thawed
1 lb. butter, melted

Instructions

Prepare the filling by combining all the ingredients and set aside.
In a 9 x 13 cake pan, coat the bottom with butter using a pastry brush.
Gently lay one phyllo sheet into the pan, folding it in half.
Coat with butter and repeat layering for 10-12 layers.
Spread ¼ of the walnut filling mixture on top.
Repeat phyllo layers and walnut filling three more times, ending with at least 8 layers of phyllo on top.
Place in the refrigerator to chill for at least 6 hours.
Remove from refrigerator, cut into squares and then triangles.
Bake at 350˚ for one hour or until top layer of phyllo is browned and crispy.
Remove from oven and pour syrup on top. (syrup directions follow.)
TO MAKE SYRUP:
Mix all ingredients together and boil for 30 minutes.
