If you’re looking for a snack that satisfies, look no further! This Mexican-Spiced Buttered Popcorn hits the spot and even without nasty MSG, it’s a good kind of addictive.

I begin with my own homegrown, organic, heirloom popcorn. Do you know how easy it is to grow your own popcorn?

It’s goes about like this …

Buy organic popcorn seed. {You can buy Dakota Black Popcorn here, the kind shown in the photo.}
Put it in the ground, about an inch deep, and cover it up.
Make sure it is watered occasionally while it is small.
Let it grow.
In the fall when the stalk is all dried up, pick the ears, take the kernels off the cob and allow to dry for 3 weeks at room temperature.
Store in a tight jar and use like commercial popcorn.

That’s how simple it is. You can grow 10-12 stalks in a 16 square foot space. It’s a great project for kids!

But, I digress. It is almost gardening season so maybe you can cut me some slack. Now, back to the recipe.

As of this date, there is no genetically modified popcorn on the market. This is good news. You don’t really need to worry whether you’re eating pesticides in the DNA of your popcorn. However, even though I grown my own popcorn, I no longer save seed from it each year. There are just too many farms around me growing GM crops to trust the cross-contamination. I buy new seed every year. If you’re concerned about pesticides (and, you should be) I suggest buying organic popcorn kernels if you don’t want to grow your own.

I use the highest quality butter I can afford because … butter. It has the potential to be quite nourishing if it’s from pastured cows. Here’s why.

As for the spices, I’ve converted all my herbs and spices to organic over the last two years. An easy, relatively painless way to do it is to replace conventional spices with organic spices whenever you run out of them. I’ve converted to organic because with spices, you may not be eating a lot of them but you are eating them in a concentrated form. Whenever a spice or herb is dried, it shrinks down. If the spice is concentrated, the pesticide used on it will be too.
